Over the next decade, The Arctic Cycle will develop and produce U.S. and international premieres of eight plays by playwright Chantal Bilodeau, set in the eight countries of the Arctic. Using the power of storytelling to investigate the challenges posed by climate change, the plays will chronicle our evolving relationship to the human and natural worlds and examine how our new reality affects who we are and how we live. In addition, operating on the principle that complex problems must be addressed through collaborative efforts, each play will engage artists across disciplines as well as geographic and cultural borders; solicit input from earth and social scientists; and actively seek community and educational partners to expand the scope of the plays and provide strategies for action.

Progressing backwards from present day to 1895, when Fridtjof Nansen established a record for sailing closest to the North Pole, Forward, the second play of the Cycle, presents a poetic history of climate change in Norway. The play looks at a series of seemingly unrelated characters confronting small, day-to-day challenges, and making choices that seemed innocent at the time but turned out to be important markers in history. Woven through these stories is the passionate love affair between Nansen and Ice.

ArtLab # 16 er finansiert av Hålogaland Teater, RadArt, Dramatikkens hus, den Amerikanske Ambassaden i Oslo, Canadian Arts Council og Kansas State University.
